My approach

Therapy is not about fixing what’s “wrong” — it’s about understanding yourself more deeply and creating space for change and healing.

At Romano Counseling Services, therapy is a collaborative process rooted in compassion, curiosity, and evidence-based care. Together, we’ll work to uncover patterns, process experiences, and strengthen the skills and perspectives that help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

MY CORE

PHILOSOPHY

COLLABORATIVE. TRAUMA-INFORMED. STRENGTH-BASED.

Every person brings a lifetime of experiences, relationships, and strengths into therapy. I see my role not as an expert who tells you what to do, but as a partner walking alongside you — helping you access your own insight, resilience, and capacity for growth. My approach is:

  • We co-create the process together, moving at your pace and focusing on what matters most to you.

  • I recognize how past experiences — both big and small — can shape your nervous system, relationships, and sense of safety. Therapy honors this and centers safety and empowerment.

  • Healing begins with what’s already working. We’ll build on your existing strengths to help you navigate challenges more effectively.

THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES

ART THERAPY

  • Art therapy allows expression beyond words. It offers a creative, nonverbal way to explore emotions, process experiences, and connect to yourself more deeply. You don’t need to be an artist — the process is about insight, not aesthetics.

Through art-making, clients often uncover meaning and emotional clarity that talking alone might not reach. It can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and deepen self-awareness.

EMDR THERAPY

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain reprocess distressing or traumatic experiences. By engaging both sides of the brain through bilateral stimulation (often eye movements or tapping), EMDR supports the natural healing process, helping to reduce emotional distress and reframe limiting beliefs.

This approach can be particularly helpful for trauma, anxiety, and other experiences that feel “stuck” or keep resurfacing despite insight or effort.

  • Please note that insurance does not cover EMDR sessions for non-PTSD clients. If you are interested in this service, follow up with your insurance about Out of Pocket benefits!

PSYCHOEDUCATION

  • Understanding why we feel or react a certain way is often the first step to change. Psychoeducation integrates tools from neuroscience, mindfulness, and psychology to help you recognize patterns, manage triggers, and build emotional resilience.

Together, we’ll explore practical coping skills and personalized strategies that make daily life more manageable and meaningful.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your first session is all about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what’s been on your mind, what brought you to therapy, and what you hope to gain from the process. You can expect:

  • A calm, judgment-free space where you set the pace

  • Open, honest dialogue — I’ll check in regularly to ensure therapy feels supportive and aligned with your needs

  • Collaboration — we’ll define your goals together and revisit them as you grow

  • Flexibility — therapy evolves with you, not against you

Many clients say sessions feel both grounding and empowering — a balance of reflection and action that builds over time.
